I think it comes down to the fact that the dial's voids look almost like minute markers, but in reality, they don't line up at specific intervals. When setting the time, I tended not to know what minute the hand was pointing at because the dial and the indices on the crystal kind of conflict. That's right, multiple satellites communicate with this piece to make sure it is as accurate, to the second, at all times, as it can possibly be. To be more specific, the GPS signals transmitted to the watch are working from atomic clocks that are accurate to within one second every 1,000 years. One of the stars of the show for yours truly, and a fierce competitor later in the day, a 1966 Ferrari 206S. For this reason, the clock mounted on the panel of the Mercury capsule used 24-hour indication, and was set to UTC (Universal Coordinated Time). This 24-hour indication would allow the astronaut to know the time of day, without needing to consider whether the time shown was AM or PM. With relatively minor modifications, the Venus 178 movement of the Navitimer could be used for 24-hour indication. But, other than Rolex, all of the other brands are most famous for a product or products other than watches. While the bold elements of the dial do well to remain visually front and center, I prefer the seconds indicators found in the Avyssos and Mihanikos. To me, the execution of both previous indicators felt more industrially abstract, grounding the designs back to their tool-watch roots, while the eye feels a little more graphic in execution and a bit more on the nose.
