Each and every Wednesday, we present a fresh installment of "My Watch Story," a video series starring HODINKEE readers and their most prized watches. Today, we have five new stories submitted by Tjodi Van Elk, Marshall Sutcliffe, Wilson Bruno Bunga, Will Thomas, and Salem Al-Mutawa. As I said before, if you're a fan of vintage watches, this is a great auction (and group of friends) you really should be a part of some day. Davide Parmegiani, Claude Cohen, and their team put on a great event with a great selection of watches. But if you can't make it to Monaco, I hope these photos will make you feel like you were there. Now for the plot twist: most, if not all, of the watches containing said caliber featured Geneva stripes on the baseplate. Those previous Skeletec watches were a little more traditionally decorated, as one would expect from the L.U.C line. My first guess is that the XT PP's baseplate is somehow supposed to work congruously with the sandblasted finish of the Alpine Eagle case. Arabic “Explorer” dials can often seem a little stark and, dare I say, empty? The textured pattern on the Atom adds some visual interest to this watch without clutter and hobnail is not a decoration often seen, especially on sports watches. The "Genève" mention on the dial also testifies to the brand positioning at the time; Breitling had moved its headquarters to the most well known Swiss city for added prestige. The watch is also notable for featuring the "twin-jet" symbol on its waterproof caseback, a logo that would eventually appear on Navitimer dials in the mid-1960s. It's exactly what you expect from a Rolex GMT-Master in yellow gold, and that's why I like it so much. It would have been easy for the brand to have overcomplicated this – adding too many touches of green, doing some out there bi-color bezel combo. Instead, the designers decided to keep it simple, and what we have is a handsome addition to the lineup.
Autodromo is all about the cross-section of horology and automotive racing. It's in the name. And this Group C takes its name from the Group C cars of the 1980s – a time when the racing world saw a massive shift from the purely mechanical to the computerized. In fact, those Group C cars hit the track with a look and design that continues to inform what we know about race cars today. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, reference 228236 (40mm) and 128236 (36mm). Case, platinum with platinum bezel, water-resistance 100 meters. Movement, Rolex caliber 3255, COSC-certified; Superlative Chronometer. Roman numeral markers, ice blue dial. Price upon request. Beckham understands how to speak to women. Today her look is polished and pristine. Her ready-to-wear line consists of relaxed, slightly deconstructed city tailoring, perfectly cut wool coats and fluid, ankle-grazing silk dresses. It's for grown-ups. Replik Omega Uhren Panerai is known for a number of things, and they're all on display with Boulud's ceramic Radiomir Black Seal. More than the watch, the story of how Boulud even discovered Panerai is worth the price of admission. As he tells it, Richemont boss Johann Rupert dined at his restaurant one evening (Richemont owns Panerai). Also, that dial featured stick markers and white gold hands instead of the black Arabic numerals and black hands seen here. As an aside, there is another new 5270, the 5270/1R, which is rose gold with a black dial and matching rose gold bracelet.
Quartz watch movements are cheaper to produce and are more accurate than their purely mechanical counterparts. It was Besson who managed to lead the production of an in-house caliber for a legendary sports watch, and the caliber proved to be incredibly robust – his contributions to the project were so significant that Le Temps reporter Jean-Bernard Vuillème felt he should be called, "the father of the Daytona chronograph.
